Virtual IFB

Deep sea mining (DSM) is a speculative commercial industry - sometimes marketed as a sustainable activity - with ambitions to extract mineral deposits from the ocean floor. DSM is theoretical, but proponents are aggressively seeking capital, including from ESG investors.

Join us for an eye-opening discussion on the financial, environmental, and social risks of deep sea mining (DSM), a controversial and unproven industry that seeks to extract minerals from the ocean floor. Despite being touted as a potential solution for the green energy transition, DSM presents significant threats to our planet's largest carbon sink—the deep ocean—while posing substantial financial, legal, and reputational risks for investors.

Why You Should Attend:

This session is tailored for impact investors, traditional investors, philanthropists, and anyone interested in evaluating claims about the green, or blue, economy through the lens of ocean health, climate change, biodiversity, and human rights. The discussion will explore the technical and financial uncertainties of DSM, the growing Indigenous and youth opposition, human rights concerns, and the significant potential liabilities faced by both public and private investors.

DSM comes with steep costs, market uncertainties, and significant environmental impacts. Learn why 32 countries have called for a moratorium, why companies including Google, SAP, and BMW pledge not to use or invest in DSM-mined minerals, and why civil society, scientists, and Indigenous communities are pushing back against this industry.

Key Topics:

  • The financial risks and liabilities associated with DSM, from fluctuating metal demand and pricing to an uncertain regulatory regime
  • Why DSM is not a viable or necessary solution for the green energy transition
  • How DSM threatens marine ecosystems, cultural heritage, human rights, food sources, and future climate resilience
  • Which investors and financial institutions have excluded DSM
  • The current state of play for DSM internationally and in countries exploring it.
