Gender-Lens Investing

100% Mission-Aligned Investing: Perspectives from a Foundation

Women are roughly 50% of the world's population. Recognizing, supporting, and empowering women in society supports the fabric of society overall.

In this session, we'll hear from a practitioner's perspective. Dr. Ruth Shaber, founder of Tara Health Foundation, will host a lively discussion on how she created a foundation whose portfolio and investments are 100% mission-aligned.

We'll hear more about:

  1. How the foundation uses an integrated capital approach to build the field of Gender-Lens Investing.
  2. What does a 100% mission-align foundation portfolio look like?
  3. How the foundation evaluates financial risk when considering its investment decisions.

Join our upcoming conversation online, bringing us together at home. We will try to make this as interactive as possible given the online forum.

At CMI she worked with Kaiser Permanente’s regional and national leaders to apply the best evidence and successful systems approaches to create reliable clinical performance.

Ruth is a member of the board of directors at Jacaranda Health and on the Medical Advisory Committee for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She received her B.A. from Yale University and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

About Tara Health Foundation:
Dr. Ruth Shaber created the Tara Health Foundation in 2014 after more than two decades working on the frontlines of women’s health care. After founding the Women’s Health Research Institute at Kaiser Permanente, she committed to building a foundation that would apply the principles of evidence-based medicine to philanthropy. Tara Health is dedicated to identifying and supporting innovative solutions that improve the health and well-being of women and girls.

Dr. Shaber decided to name the foundation after the goddess Tara in order to invoke the strength and compassion of a powerful female deity. Tara, a Hindu goddess later adopted in Buddhism, embodies both fierceness and maternal protection for all beings. She represents creation, wisdom, oneness and strength to overcome obstacles.

Tara Health is now taking this commitment to the next level, by engaging peers to join in piloting and demonstrating the use of creative philanthropic capital to drive social and financial returns. The foundation also invests in nonprofits and startups working in U.S. reproductive health and workplace equity.
